This year, I am doing an breezy study of What Does IT Mean to be Hispanic, my reading thread on Reading fir Fun, a Goodreads group. In the first family picture, "The Fair in Reynosa", I run across handmade paper cutouts framing a very basic homemade vendor booth--some frame posts that would be like shooting fish in a barrel for someone with bones carpentry skills to make, the sides of the stand up created by a tarp slung over the frame and held in place past rope. All 3 of the booths depicted hither are all made in a similar mode. Homemade. Skillful. Serviceable.
In this same moving picture, fair workers and visitors practice ways of the Mexican folk--A adult female sells nutrient items that she carries on her head and that is covered with a elementary cotton cloth while a little girl plays with a doll, maybe corn husk, that is dressed like mestozo women of Mexico.

The book, Family Pictures/Cuadros de Familia, gives the reader snapshots of family unit traditions throughout the story that are written bilingually, first in English and over again in Castilian below. The author told most her experience growing upwardly in Kingsville, Texas and shared a wide variety of the traditions and activities she participated in with her family and friends on each folio. Recollections included Carmen sharing most going to her grandparent's house as her grandmother was hanging the laundry The volume, Family unit Pictures/Cuadros de Familia, gives the reader snapshots of family traditions throughout the story that are written bilingually, first in English language and again in Spanish beneath. The author told about her feel growing up in Kingsville, Texas and shared a broad diversity of the traditions and activities she participated in with her family and friends on each page. Recollections included Carmen sharing about going to her grandparent's house as her grandmother was hanging the laundry and picking equally many oranges off their orange tree equally she could. Another fond memory included was Carmen's 6th and her blood brother's fourth altogether political party. Their family gathered and celebrated as the piñata was hit. Overall, the volume was able to include many of Carmen'due south Hispanic family traditions with cute artwork to friction match the scenes.

Even though I am not from United mexican states and accept never been to Texas, I could saw a correlation betwixt the author's life and my ain. Family Pictures is a multicultural and bilingual text that I highly enjoyed reading. I chose this book as part of my text set considering information technology perfectly captures what it's like to grow up in an extended family with multiple relatives and generations. The volume is written in both Spanish and English which makes the text come alive for readers. Because this is an autobiographical piece written past the author about her ain life growing upward in Texas, at that place is no plot line or conflict/resolution. However, the language style is still highly age-appropriate and respectful of the Mexican culture. Characters include people from the author's own family and life and innovate students to new perspectives. I enjoyed the illustrations in this book considering they were washed by the writer herself. She paints pictures from her personal memories which makes this volume more than relatable for readers. While reading this book, I felt as though I was looking into the writer's past through her bespeak of view. It was a very personal experience. I would recommend this book for a diverse classroom because the author is an insider of the group she writes about and therefore presents the story without generalizing or stereotyping.

I personally was not a big fan of this book. I found it to be a wearisome and dull read. I did however like the pictures because they were very colorful and detailed. I took notice to very pocket-sized things in the moving picture that encompassed Mexican culture. I think students would like it better because it is a first hand account in to the life of someone of a different groundwork.

If I had ESOL students that spoke Castilian I would have them read this book. I think seeing the Spanish and being able to closely compare it to the English would be very enlightening for them. I as well remember they would capeesh this book because it represents their own culture. I would only bear witness this book to Spanish ESOLs because seeing two new language may confuse students.

When I kickoff discovered Carmen Lomas Garza and her books I was diddled away. I felt as if she had written my life story! The pictures and the niggling anecdotes and tales of her life were absolutely parallel to mine. I could not become over how meticulously accurate her descriptions were of the babyhood memories she depicted in her illustrations and words.
I take read this book so many times and each time I read it and expect at the illustrations, and brilliant images come back to me and I am overcome with When I first discovered Carmen Lomas Garza and her books I was blown abroad. I felt every bit if she had written my life story! The pictures and the little anecdotes and tales of her life were admittedly parallel to mine. I could non get over how meticulously authentic her descriptions were of the childhood memories she depicted in her illustrations and words.
I have read this book so many times and each time I read it and await at the illustrations, and bright images come back to me and I am overcome with such an bliss and happiness. I utilise these books as a reference to my own children so that they tin appreciate the manner I grew up and the simplicity of a humbler time.
All of the illustrations are brilliant but if I had to option a favorite it would be the 'tamalada' event. I take such wonderful memories of my mother, aunts, cousins and neighbors coming to help with the tamales and my mother'southward genuine joy of making them. This volume is a perfect tool to apply in the classroom for any age, grade and ethnicity. Carmen Lomas Garza yous are my HERO!

Family Pictures is a great multicultural picture show volume. The cover shows a Mexican family in Texas working together in a kitchen making tamales.
